5 Ways To Boost Sorority Academic Motivation That Actually Work

Hey all!

I think we can all agree that when we have some kind of leadership position, we want to make the best of it and use our position to make improvements. For me, it's being the Scholarship Chairman for my chapter.

Sororities generally have a minimum GPA requirement. If you drop below that, you are put on some type of plan to raise your GPA. Consider it a probation period. In Phi Sigma Sigma, if you dropped below a 2.5 GPA, you must show some kind of improvement (even if it's just 0.01). If you go three semesters without showing any kind of improvement, well... Basically it's a three strikes you're out type of thing.

Not gonna lie, being the overseer of all those girls' academics can be stressful at times. But never fear! I brainstormed some sure-fire ways for you to help boost your chapter's academic motivation!

  1. Have A Scholarship Event

Hold some type of event with your chapter before or after a meeting. You can make it short and sweet, or make it longer and include games to hold your sisters' attention. During my event in September, I had a quick powerpoint (which you can find here!), passed out "brain food" (healthy snacks for them to much on while I talked... see my list of the most worth-it brain food here!), handed out coloring pages and a calendar I made to help with organization (find my cute template I made here!).

  1. Make Incentives

This is probably the most powerful method to boost academic motivation. Incentives are a great way to get your sisters focused. Everyone wants rewarded! For my chapter, I have a small $75 budget. I used a portion of it on the snacks at the event I mentioned above. I split the rest up for incentives. I announced I would be giving a $15 gift card of their choice to the girl with the highest semester GPA, one to the sister with the most improved semester GPA, and one to the girl who had the most study table hours. So far, so good.

  1. Give Out Snacks

This one is a no brainer. Who doesn't like food? Find ways to incorporate snacks into your events, meetings and/or study tables. I passed out Nature's Valley bars at my scholarship event and said how they are a good example of brain food, versus chips or other unhealthy options. Where there is food... the people will come!

  1. Set Up Study Tables

Come mid terms and finals, your sisters will greatly appreciate you setting up study tables or reserving study rooms for them. It's a great way to bring everyone together to get help or help one another. It will help keep girls focused and on track, too.

  1. Hold Contests

This is kind of just reiterating the incentives thing. You can be more creative with this though. I started a contest where throughout the month, girls send me their scores if they get an 85% or higher on homework assignments or quizzes/exams. At the end of each month, I draw a name and she gets to chose something as her "prize." It's typically things like new Phi Sig shirts or other stuff worth while.

I know these five tricks have worked for my chapter. If you want to boost your chapter's academics or if they are falling behind... try these out, I promise they will work.

If you have any other ideas, feel free to share them below! Have a great Thursday :)
